O Biofilme é um perigo grave para a saúde, muitas vezes ignorado porque geralmente não é visível. O Biofilme desenvolve-se dentro das infra-estruturas de água, ou seja, canalizações, torneiras, chuveiros, linhas de bebedouros para aves e gado, tubos de refrigeração, etc. O Biofilme é composto de bactérias e outros patógenos e reveste o interior das infra-estruturas de água, contaminando a água que é fornecida, permitindo a migração reversa de bactérias.
A migração reversa de bactérias é o processo pelo qual as bactérias migram no sentido oposto do fluxo de água. Este movimento na direção oposta do fluxo de água é possível porque as bactérias se agarram ao biofilme e crescem em todas as direções. Assim, um patógeno pode entrar num sistema de água através de uma torneira, espalhando-se por todo o sistema, podendo ir até à fonte de abastecimento. Para evitar esta contaminação, o biofilme deve ser eliminado.
